I haven’t seen this story on tumblr yet so I thought I’d share it.
This is the photo of former Prime Minister Julia Gillard that will hang at Old Parliament House. It was taken by Sophie Dean, a 12-year old girl with Down Syndrome, on the day her state signed up to the national disability insurance scheme (NDIS). According to Sophie’s mother, the Prime Minister was immensely attentive and genuine with Sophie, despite criticisms that she comes across as robotic and detached.
The NDIS, or DisabilityCare, was a landmark reform of healthcare in Australia that provided support to thousands of Australians with disabilities. Gllard pushed DisabilityCare through parliament and negotiations with the states despite its large price tag at a time where her government was desperately trying to make a surplus. The Prime Minister would later call DisabilityCare one of her proudest achievements out of her three years in office.
